Scientific research has shown that sickness and disease thrive in an ACIDIC environment. Becoming more ALKALINE leads to a healthier body and mind. If you take medicines or supplements while your pH is ACIDIC, it is a bit like washing dishes in a sink of dirty water, even when you put in plenty of soap, you can't get the dishes clean. We have also mentioned before that many nutritionists now consider obesity to be an over-acidity problem. This is because when the body gets overwhelmed with acidity, that it cannot remove through its normal functions - urine, sweat etc - it's last line of defence is to literally lock the acidity up in fat cells.

Green vegetables, including grasses (generally juiced) and sprouts, MUST be the foundation of a good health diet. The fiber, enzymes, chlorophyll, minerals, and many nutrients are necessary for vibrant health and as an alkalising food for the body. JUICING AT HOME - For those who have the time ...

The best juicers to buy are the masticating juicers as opposed to the centrifuge juicers. The masticating juicers are way better at literally squeezing out all the nutritious juices from fruits and vegetables - the downside is that they are more expensive than the less efficient centrifuge juicers. In my opinion one of the best all round juicers to buy is the KUVINGS Vertical Whole Slow Juicer. It does a fantastic job, is easy to operate and easy to clean. You can buy them online for around £349 from - We also like the newly launched Greenis F-9900 All In One Juicer - It is really easy to clean and produces really smooth juice. It does not have a wide feed like the Kuvings, but then again it is easier to clean and is over £100 cheaper! 
You could use a centrifuge juicer, but they are not nearly as efficient at extracting the juice as a cold press masticating juicer and the heat generated whilst juicing the fruit or vegetables, can deplete some of the enzymes and vitamins.

I use the juicer to mainly juice Carrots, Beetroot and Apples as well as a whole range of different green vegetables like spinach and broccoli. Whilst juicing Apples, I add about an eighth of a teaspoon of Ascorbic Acid Powder (Vitamin C) that I stir into the juice. This stops the apple juice from oxidising and turning brown. If I juice 8 or 9 apples this makes about 1 liter of juice, that I store in a Kilner flip-top bottle in the fridge and it lasts well for about 4 days or so. I like to use a mixture of apples, but out of the 9 apples I juice they will mostly be Granny Smiths, which have quite a tart taste and are not too sweet - Green apples contain less sugar than red apples.

Why Apple Juice? - We know that we should try and avoid sugar - even fruit sugars, but making the switch over to a sugar free diet straight away can be very difficult.  Apples are superfoods. They are rich in polyphenols, flavonoids and are loaded with antioxidants. Research suggests that apples may reduce the risk of colon cancer, prostate cancer and lung cancer.So that is why I suggest that you start off using Green Apples (less sugar than red apples) as the base for your smoothie and then slowly replacing or blending it in time with Carrot juice, Cucumber juice, Fresh Tomato juice or Beetroot juice - Or a mixture of all 4! 

Apple Juice Benefits ...

Apples are known for its excellent source of pectin and fibers. They are high in vitamin A and C and a good source of potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus. Most of an apple’s nutrients are stored on the skin or just under the skin. There are the phytonutrients: ellagic acid, malic acid, chlorogenic acid, and quercetin. There are many more phytonutrients in an apple, some yet to be discovered and named. These compounds are high in anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects.
Asthmatics who drink apple juice daily will encounter less wheezing and asthma attack due to the high vitamin C and anti-oxidant compounds. The high content of potassium in apple prevents loss of calcium in the blood which in turn help prevent loss of calcium in the bones. Daily eating/drinking an apple helps preserve bone density and prevent osteoporosis. Apples contain a natural laxative. When drunk as juice, it helps aid bowel movements. It is most effective when mixed with carrots and spinach juices, you can expect bowel movement the next day.

Carrot Juice Benefits ...

If you have never had Carrot juice before, you will be amazed at how pleasant it tastes. TIP - Make sure that you scrub and rinse all your fruit before juicing. Carrot is one of the most healing foods that provides the finest and highest quality in nutrients, especially from its juice. It is an excellent source of pro-vitamin A, vitamins C, D, E, K, B1 and B6.
It is rich with biotin, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, organic sodium and some trace minerals. Carotenes, the famous ingredient in carrots, is an anti-oxidant that has powerful healing virtues for many diseases. Drinking a glass of carrot juice daily will do much more for you than many bottles of supplement tablets. The vital organic alkaline elements in carrots help balance the blood acidity and blood sugar. Its anti-inflammatory effect greatly helps reduce arthritis, rheumatism, gout and other inflammations. It does wonders for boosting the immune system by increasing the production and performance of white blood cells; building resistance to various kinds of infections.

Beetroot Juice Benefits ...

Beets are loaded with vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and C. They are an excellent source of calcium, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, sodium and iron. While the sweet beetroot has some of the minerals in its greens to a lesser degree, it is also a remarkable source of choline, folate, iodine, manganese, organic sodium, potassium, fiber and carbohydrates in the form of natural digestible sugars. 
Its iron content, though not high, is of the highest and finest quality that makes excellent food that is blood building. This renders it highly effective in treating many ailments caused by our toxic environment and surrounding. Its alkalinity is essential and effective in combating acidosis. All its healing and medicinal values effectively normalizes blood pressure, lowering high blood pressure or elevating low blood pressure. Betaine, an amino acid in beetroot, has significant anti-cancer properties. Studies show that beets juice inhibits formation of cancer-causing compounds and is protective against colon or stomach cancer. It is very healing for liver toxicity or bile ailments, like jaundice, hepatitis, food poisoning, diarrhea or vomiting.

Cucumber Juice Benefits ...

The cucumber contains alkaline-forming minerals and is an excellent source of vitamin C and A (anti-oxidants), folate, manganese, molybdenum, potassium, silica, sulfur, and lesser amounts of vitamin B complex, sodium, calcium, and phosphorus.
The alkalinity of the minerals in cucumber juice effectively helps in regulating the body’s blood pH, neutralizing acidity. The juice is also soothing for the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers. Like celery, cucumber juice can help regulate blood pressure because of its minerals and traces of sodium. Cucumber juice is diuretic, encouraging waste removal through urination. This also helps in the dissolution of kidney stones.

Wheatgrass Juice - One of the most potent and effective juices that has been shown to be very effective from a health perspective is Wheat Grass Juice. I used to juice my own home-grown Wheat Grass, but it is really quite a performance and does not last long once juiced. You can now buy your Wheatgrass from our sister company - The Wheatgrass is juiced into 30ml BPA free plastic tubs and then packed in quantities of 5. 

Wheatgrass Juice Benefits ...

Wheat Grass juice is one of the best sources of Chlorophyll today. Wheatgrass, in juice form, contains 70% chlorophyll. Wheatgrass juice has a highly energizing and alkalizing effect. Wheatgrass is a complete food and an excellent source of vitamin C, E, K and B complex (including B12). In the minerals department, it is rich in calcium, cobalt, germanium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, protein, sodium, sulphur, and zinc. This miracle grass also has a long list of amino acids – about 17 types of them and about 80 known enzymes.

Chlorophyll is very important to help to keep our bodies clean. Chlorophyll helps to oxygenate the body. It also has a detoxifying effect and it closely resembles the molecules of human red blood cells. Chlorophyll has been shown to produce an unfavourable environment for bacterial growth in the body and therefore effective in increasing the body's resistance to illness, helps to purify the liver and neutralise toxins in the body. Wheatgrass juice encourages a healthy immune system, supports healthy skin and hair, contributes to red blood cell development and increase vitality to healthy levels, providing a tangible immediate and long term energy boost.

If you want to do your own juicing the Juices will last for about 3 days in the fridge.

Blending in a blender allows you to combine juices with other liquids, powders or fruits. This is the quick and easy bit. You can also blend other alkaline fruits like pineapple, red berries, raspberries or strawberries. Instead of juicing cucumber, try blending it, as it holds onto more fiber when blended.

There are a wide range of blenders on the market starting from as low as £20.00, but as with most things you get what you pay for. I personally use the Sage by Heston Blumenthal Kinetix Control Blender - at £199.00 - Quite expensive, but a brilliant blender - really easy to operate, with many variable settings, very strong and dead easy to clean. Highly recommended. 

IMPORTANT - Before I have my morning health smoothie I have a glass of filtered alkaline water (see here for our range of water filters) with the juice of half a lemon squeezed into it. This is a great way of hydrating and alkalising at the start of the day and is highly recommended. It really does not taste as bad as it sounds!


Ideally we should be looking at eating 80% alkalising foods and 20% acidic foods. Currently our standard western diet is completely the opposite - 80% acidic and 20% alkaline - which is causing massive problems, over time, to our general health. To achieve an 80/20 alkali/acid diet is very hard to jump straight into, so try to build up to achieve a 60/40 alkali intake as your first step, and then once comfortable with that, build up to the 80/20 alkali/acid balance. 

SIDE NOTE: WHERE POSSIBLE PLEASE STOP EATING SUGAR ... Sugar is one of the most acidic foods available to us and is the root-cause of practically every health challenge you can think of. Eating sugar will negate most of the hard work you are doing with alkalising greens. Again try and cut your sugar intake down gradually as it is really hard to give up sugar right away. Every little step helps towards making your body a mainly sugar-free zone. Fruits are OK in moderation - especially seasonal fruits and berries.

Here's a final important point ... It takes 20 parts of alkaline to neutralise 1 part of acid.
